Pattern

Pull quotes

Break a long reading surface without breaking its rhythm.

When to use

  • When a page has enough narrative depth for emphasis to be earned
  • When the quote can clarify or intensify the surrounding argument
  • When the layout needs a visual pause without switching modes entirely

Avoid when

  • When the quote repeats the heading or adds no new emphasis
  • When every section wants one
  • When mobile layout would reduce it to decorative clutter

Implementation notes

  • Keep the quote visibly related to the prose, not detached like an ad slot
  • Use generous margins and a quiet border or accent, not oversized quote marks
  • Do not let pull quotes become wider than the main reading logic can support
