Pattern
Pull quotes
Break a long reading surface without breaking its rhythm.
When to use
- When a page has enough narrative depth for emphasis to be earned
- When the quote can clarify or intensify the surrounding argument
- When the layout needs a visual pause without switching modes entirely
Avoid when
- When the quote repeats the heading or adds no new emphasis
- When every section wants one
- When mobile layout would reduce it to decorative clutter
Implementation notes
- Keep the quote visibly related to the prose, not detached like an ad slot
- Use generous margins and a quiet border or accent, not oversized quote marks
- Do not let pull quotes become wider than the main reading logic can support
