Narrow and wide reading modes

A page can shift between narrow narrative reading and wider supporting blocks without losing coherence.

When to use

  • When longform prose alternates with media or utility blocks
  • When certain sections need more horizontal room than the paragraphs do

Avoid when

  • When every section keeps changing width for no reason
  • When the shift confuses hierarchy instead of clarifying it

Implementation notes

  • Define a default narrative measure and a limited set of wider breakouts
  • Use the wider mode intentionally for figures, metrics, comparisons, or code
  • Keep transitions visibly structured with spacing and rules
