Pattern
Narrow and wide reading modes
A page can shift between narrow narrative reading and wider supporting blocks without losing coherence.
When to use
- When longform prose alternates with media or utility blocks
- When certain sections need more horizontal room than the paragraphs do
Avoid when
- When every section keeps changing width for no reason
- When the shift confuses hierarchy instead of clarifying it
Implementation notes
- Define a default narrative measure and a limited set of wider breakouts
- Use the wider mode intentionally for figures, metrics, comparisons, or code
- Keep transitions visibly structured with spacing and rules
